Hoof fungus or Tinder fungus

Close up of Hoof fungus or Tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius) growing at the base of a living birch tree in a Norfolk wood in late summer. This species grows on both dead and living trees and causes a white soft-rot of the heartwood.
