  • Close up of a female cleg-fly (Haematopota pluvialis) biting the arm of a person in a damp woodland habitat in Norfolk. This nasty little fly is a close relative of the horse flies and is one of the most universally disliked of insects. Only the females bite. They fly silently and the first indication we get of its presence is a sharp jab from its blade-like mouthparts. The itching after the bite, last for days.
